How I Start Working Out Again

54

Today’s post is dedicated to returning to and restarting my workout routine. But first, a little bit about myself: I get into intense training regimens and then ruts. I’ve been running for the past two years and have participated in two marathon relays. A previous knee problem halted me for a while, and I was overrunning. I took a few months off before moving to a boutique gym in my area that offered CrossFit programs. The calendar grew jam-packed, and when the holidays arrived, the exercise regimen was abandoned.

So today I am sharing how I start working out again after being in a rut.

Mentally Prepare Yourself

I mentally prepare for my workouts a week in advance. I psych myself up by imagining how I’ll feel and look after working out.

Check The Calendar

Consider your schedule and when the optimum time is to fit in a 30-minute workout. For me, the optimal time will be 9:30 a.m., after I drop off all of the kids at school. I know I’ll be finished by 10/10:15 and can return home to work till I pick up the kids from school. If you know your nighttime routine includes dinner, kids’ activities, and homework, don’t postpone your workout until the evening. It will not happen, and you will likely be fatigued.

Pinterest

When I work out, I get bored really quickly. Honestly, I despise working out! I’d rather flee from a bank robber than work out. But…I know I have to be in shape for my health. To avoid monotony, I pin exciting routines to my Fitness page on Pinterest. You may view anything I’ve pinned on my board here.

Think Outside The Gym

You do not need a fancy gym to work out. When I was really into jogging, I always went outside. I would run through neighborhoods with large mansions, lakes, and long wooded paths. If it’s extremely cold where you live, use your steps for exercise. Perform arm dips and sprint up and down the stairs. Stair lunges, pushups, etc. I purchased a simple workout ball that came with a DVD to perform ab routines. The options are limitless.

Buy A New Outfit For Motivation

Before I begin working out and mentally prepare myself, I purchase a new pair of leggings, sports bra, or tennis shoes. There’s nothing wrong with indulging yourself, especially if it’s to push you to complete one of your goals. No matter what, we all need a little push in the right direction, even if it means buying a new clothing. Furthermore, you may find gym gear at reasonable prices, so you don’t have to worry about spending too much. It excites me to put them on and get out there!

Find A Workout Buddy

Do you have a buddy or neighbor with whom you could meet a few times per week or month to workout? A friend can sometimes help you stay motivated and accountable.

Start Simple

Don’t push yourself too hard right away. Begin easy and keep your training enjoyable. I’d like to get back into running fitness by running two miles at a time. Right now, I can’t even run a mile. I might sprint for half a song, stroll for a full song, and then gradually increase my distance to a mile over the course of a month. Eventually, that will turn into two miles. Don’t force yourself to exercise for an hour if you haven’t worked out in three years. Begin by walking for 10-15 minutes at a fast speed. Booking tennis lessons was also helpful to a buddy.Because she was putting her money where her mouth was, this financial incentive helped her stay on course. But for her, this was the only thing that worked. To avoid burning yourself out too soon, work your way up. You can start pushing yourself harder once you’ve been working out for a time. To keep pushing yourself further, you can use supplements like this creatine ethyl ester.
