We would much rather put our hair in a bun than deal with anything that involves a hot blow-dryer as soon as the temperature and humidity start to rise. However, some of our top hairdressers in New York say that no matter what Mother Nature throws at you, you can still have a fantastic hair day. Continue reading to learn the methods, remedies, and advice they firmly believe in.

Go For Low-maintenance Styles
Are you considering getting a very fashionable bob? Perhaps wait till September, depending on your texture. Jacob Rozenberg, a celebrity stylist, cautions against summertime shortcuts: “Long hair can be worn down, but short hair needs to be styled,” he says. He suggests trying a few face-framing hairstyles that you can leave out when your hair is up, as an alternative to high-maintenance bangs. For Laura Dyer of Antonio Prieto Salon, braids are everything. “In the summer, I give my clients a braid instead of a blow-dry after a cut,” she says. “It feels good to remove the hair from their back and neck.”Giselle Luza, a stylist based in Manhattan, adores traditional beachy waves because of their imperfection, which allows a little humidity to not destroy the style. Before applying texturizing spray, she advises curling portions away from your face using a 1.25-inch iron. Additionally, because shorter strands are more prone to frizz, Eliut Rivera of Eliut Salon suggests keeping your layers longer.

Consider Going Lighter (the Easy Way)
Go a shade lighter on the tips to produce a sun-kissed style. Colleen Flaherty, a color expert at Spoke & Weal, defines this as “shadow root blonde with platinum ends.” The secret to achieving this multi-toned look is to embrace the contrast between the vibrant tips and the roots. She explains, “It’s great for a bright yet low-maintenance beachy vibe.” The platinum grows out better and does less damage overall when it is kept at the tips.

Treat Now, Save Time Later
Rozenberg advises investing in a professional keratin treatment for the summer because few things go against each other more than hair and humidity. “Keratin treatments are an amazing option for people who want to wear their hair smooth—except for those with fine hair; it’ll make it too flat,” he acknowledges, adding that there is one catch. He advises having the stylist customize the treatment to prevent lifeless, limp hair that is free of frizz. To preserve some of the volume, he advises, “find someone who can do the treatment in sections and have them do it only on the roots, the nape of the neck, and the bangs.”

Invest In The Right Products
Dyer recommends using this Kérastase oil mist to make sure your hair stays in place throughout the day. “It allows for beachy waves without any crunch, which I love,” she explains. Additionally, it features a UV filter, which is crucial all year long but particularly during the bright summer months. Rozenberg adores this Aveda smoother for silky hair. He advises, “Put it in and let your natural waves air-dry.” Luza, on the other hand, uses IGK texture spray and Olaplex No. 3 to offer your hair movement and protection, respectively. “You can work smarter, not harder, and concentrate on enjoying time outdoors once you have a routine that works,” she says. Milbon Humidity-Blocking Oil is Rivera’s preferred. He remarks, “I appreciate how this product defines curls while remaining lightweight.”

When In Doubt, Accessorize
Luza advises using a dressed-up bun to extend a blowout and reduce heat styling.”A stylish bun and playful earrings are my go-to for looks on the second and third days,” she explains. Another fantastic choice? As a playful method to keep hair out of your face while incorporating some color and flare into your appearance, Flaherty like chunky barrettes. Dyer advises using golden combs to secure the hair at the back and pressing down the top for naturally textured hair.
